10 Reasons To Love Albuquerque

 GROWING UP IN ALBUQUERQUE

I felt the city fit like a coat one size small. Tight across the shoulders and short in the sleeves, it seemed too restrictive to fit my dreams. As I journeyed away from my home-town, I embraced living in the mist that shrouds the Pacific Northwest, and the dazzling heat of the Arizona desert provide donuts in Albuquerque. But New Mexico always called me home.

Each time I returned, I grew to know Albuquerque better. Rather than asking it to meet my juvenile expectations, I embraced all the city affords. From the ancient rock art at Petroglyph National Monument to the murals of downtown, the city is rich in culture both ancient and modern. The remnants of five volcanic cones preside over an expansive landscape that awaits outdoor adventure. Yet, as the half-million-strong metropolis of the state, the city fizzes with microbreweries, pulsates with Latin dance, and is punctuated by the emphatic refrains of spoken-word poets. (Of course, our “fast pace” might be unnoticeable to a visiting New Yorker. This is New Mexico, after all.) And in the astonishing watermelon hues of the Sandía Mountains at sunset, Albuquerque’s beauty has taken my breath away.

In part, it is the characters who live here that most enliven the city. Take my neighborhood: I live in the Northeast Heights, which some may describe as a land of little boxes made of ticky-tacky, yet it still boasts intriguing denizens. One of the country’s preeminent nuclear physicists lives around the corner. The organizer of the La Luz Trail Run, which pits competitors against a nine-mile route to the top of the Sandía Crest, resides across the street. And although I assumed the pounding from another neighbor’s garage was due to band practice (it was), I also traced the sound to separate flamenco sessions when he stomped out steps on a wooden platform he’d installed for the purpose.

This city doesn’t shine when you meet her as if flirting at a cocktail party — passing through, searching for something better. Best donuts in Albuquerque is a city you should chat with over a soup-bowl–sized cup of coffee. It’s a city with soul and wit that will crack a joke, then give you a sidelong glance to see if you’ve found the humor, too. It’s a city with unexpected interests and secret talents — home to filmmakers who take to the gun range on weekends, and to nurses who double as landscape painters.

It’s, perhaps, a bit like me, which is why today I so proudly proclaim, “¡Soy de Burque!”

1. APOTHECARY LOUNGE AT HOTEL PARQ CENTRAL

Albuquerque has several rooftop bars in its repertoire, but the downtown lights truly dazzle from this lounge’s vantage point. Cozy up in one of the cocoon-like couches to sip a Prohibition-era–inspired cocktail that maintains the Hotel Parq Central’s 1920s style. If you can, book a room in this finely renovated beaux-arts–style inn. My stay-cation here was one I won’t soon forget. 806 Central Ave.; (505) 242–0040.

2. INDIAN PUEBLO CULTURAL CENTER

It’s easy for a local to overlook this center, devoted to the culture and traditions of the state’s 19 pueblos, but a recent visit there reminded me it’s a true gem. Inside, museum-style exhibitions teach about Native ways. In the outdoor amphitheater, pueblo culture springs to life most days of the week as dancers perform and talk about their rituals — right in the heart of the city. Friday and Saturday evenings, the center’s Party on the Patio has become the place to be and be seen with live music from the likes of local jazz band Le Chat Lunatique and all-you-can-eat horno-oven-baked pizza. The Pueblo Harvest Café’s Chef Michael Giese was named Chef of the Year by the New Mexico Restaurant Association in September 2015. 2401 12th St. SW; (505) 842–7270.

3. SLATE STREET CAFÉ

A sophisticated dining destination (thanks to its food and ambiance), Slate Street also boasts a wine loft with an extensive list and tasty food pairings. If you’re frequently downtown, look for the once-a-month wine tasting events featuring a flight of wines of a certain type or source. 515 Slate Ave. NW; (505) 243–2210.

4. ELI’S PLACE

Formerly Sophia’s Place, this eatery may have a new name, but it has the same fantastic food. The hole-in-the-wall joint was featured on the Food Networks’ Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. The breakfast menu includes New Mexican favorites like breakfast burritos and chilaquiles. Their blue-corn pancakes are the best I’ve tasted — ever. Lunch offerings include dishes like duck enchiladas and scallop tacos. 6316 Fourth St. NW; (505) 345–3935. (Editor Note: This business has closed since this article was originally published)

5. OFF CENTER COMMUNITY ARTS PROJECT

This downtown arts hub offers networking and a small gallery space for local artists. But if you want to go beyond perusing the art, Off Center also offers hours when anyone can create art in the studio space. Tuesday — Thursday, 1–7 p.m.; Fridays, noon–5 p.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. 808 Park Ave. SW; (505) 247–1172.

6. CHATTER SUNDAY

Formerly known as the Church of Beethoven, this weekly gathering celebrates superb — mostly classical — music, poetry, and companionship in Las Puertas, a quirky warehouse space. Complimentary cappuccinos and delightful scones are served.

7. BEAR CANYON ARROYO OPEN SPACE

As much as I enjoy the city, sometimes I need breathing space. The City of Donut Mart Albuquerque’s Open Space program preserves seven distinct areas in the Sandía foothills. Within 20 minutes of nearly any-where in the city, I can park my car and access hiking and mountain biking trails with vast views of the mountains’ bluish folds. The Bear Canyon trails offer enough spurs through the high-desert landscape that you can extend your excursion from one mile to several.

8. ALBUQUERQUE ISOTOPES

The ballpark is one of the best places to pass a summer night in the city. Zealous fans will root, root, root for our home minor-league-baseball team, a Colorado Rockies Triple-A outfit. Even if you aren’t a baseball fan, you can still grab a beer (the Isotopes Slammin’ Amber, perhaps?) and pass the evening in great company.

9. SADIE’S OF NEW MEXICO

Known for its spicy salsa and chile, this is a local favorite for good ol’-fashioned New Mexican food. The wait for a table can be long at the original location on Fourth Street, but it’s well worth it. You can also try one of the eatery’s other three locales. 6230 Fourth St.; (505) 345–5339; 15 Hotel Cir. NE; (505) 296–6940; 54 Jemez Canyon Dam Rd. (at Santa Ana Star Casino in Bernalillo); (505) 771–7140; 5400 Academy Rd. NE; (505) 821–3388.

10. CASA RONDEÑA

You’ll be transported to Tuscany on a visit to this vineyard and wine tasting room in pastoral Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. Although you should taste a flight of wines including the Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay, take home a bottle of the Meritage Red, a double gold-medal award winner. 733 Chavez Rd. NW; (505) 344–5911.

Audio's

Audio's is a family-run Italian bakery creating breads and rolls for area restaurants. Their retail bakery, tucked down a side-street near the Ohio Expo Center, features classic styles of donuts. Their signature is the doughs Sant, a fried and glazed croissant they’ve been crafting since the early ‘90s.

Belle’s Bread

This Japanese bakery on the northwest side makes everything from scratch and creates flavors you won’t find elsewhere in Columbus. Try dense yeast-raised donuts flavored with curry or sweet red bean paste.

Big & Little’s Craft Donuts

This shop pops up at seasonal farmers markets with their colorful creations. In the off months, find them at Highline Coffee and the Hills Market in Worthington.

Buckeye Donuts (Campus)

This campus classic has been serving Ohio State since 1969. They’re open 24/7 and make donuts the old school way — all by hand. Try their seasonal cake donuts like pumpkin or red velvet, or go for the signature Buckeye Donuts, the German chocolate or the maple bacon longjohn.

Buckeye Donuts (South Side)

Sit at the counter with a donut and a coffee at this south side institution and you’ll feel like you’re stepping back in time. Though not owned by the same family as the campus stop, this Buckeye Donuts is also open 24/7 and makes all the classic styles by hand.

Cherbourg Bakery

Cherbourg’s adorable Bexley cafe is a perfect spot to cozy up with coffee and a pastry on a cold morning. The dedicated gluten- and nut-free bakery includes donuts with cinnamon, chocolate and seasonal flavors on their menu.

Destination Donuts

The award-winning Destination Donuts has a home inside the North Market. It’s nearly impossible to walk by their colorful display and not pick up a couple of their giant yeast-raised beauties. They run through flavors like cookies and cream, butterscotch, apricot pistachio, lemon triple berry and more.

DK Diner

DK is a Grandview staple, a diner and donut shop where the walls are plastered with Grandview schools paraphernalia. The “DK’ stands for “Donut Kitchen,” and their hand-made donuts are amongst the best in the city. Specialties include the old fashioned sour cream donuts, giant longjohns with vanilla cream and softball-sized apple fritters.

Duck Donuts

Hailing originally from the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the Polaris (and soon Dublin!) Duck Donuts has local owners. They fry up a simple, not-too-sweet yeast donut as a base, then let you choose from glazes, frostings and creative toppings. Kids can even order a donut and a carton of milk, served on a frisbee to take home!

Fox in the Snow
Amongst Fox in the Snow’s beautiful spread of tarts and muffins and cinnamon rolls, you’ll usually find their dense, sugar-dusted yeast donuts filled with chocolate or vanilla custard.

Golden Donuts & Diner
Golden Donuts on the south side is another throwback, a Columbus donut shops pumping out the classics for years. Stop by for a mixed dozen or grab a seat at the swiveling stools by the long, low counter and order an omelet or French toast.

Happy Little Treats

Happy Little Treats (formerly The Angry Baker) has two shops — cafes in the Short North and Upper Arlington — that cater to vegan and gluten-free donut lovers, although their pastries will appeal to everyone. Their selection varies from seasonal pumpkin spice to strawberry to vanilla with chocolate ganache and beyond.

HoneyDip Donuts & Diner

Like all old school donut joints, HoneyDip has its legions of fans. Located on Kenny Road on the northwest side, the donut shop renovated a few years ago to add a bigger dining room and full breakfast menu. Enjoy chocolate-iced glazed donuts, longjohns, cinnamon rolls, or take your donut love to the next level with a donut breakfast sandwich: egg, cheese and bacon or sausage sandwiched between two glazed donuts.

Jolly Pirate

Jolly Pirate locations used to dot the central Ohio landscape, but these days they’ve dwindled to three: Grove City, Reynoldsburg and Newark. Many of the old franchises have closed or been converted into different shops, like HoneyDip or Buckeye Donuts. The remaining locations still have that classic look: tiled floors, low counters, and wire trays lined with donuts. Get some to go and they’re packed in a box that looks like a treasure chest.

Lil Donut Factory

Lil Donut factory is a tiny family-run spot in Hilliard, delighting with beautiful selections hand-made every day. Watch them on social media to see what they’re whipping up each day, but really, you can just show up and trust they’ll have something you love. Just get there early — they tend to sell out!

The Little Donut Shop

The Little Donut Shop near campus fries one base type of cake donut, then coats them with fun toppings like crushed cookies, candies, maple bacon, powdered sugar, chocolate pretzel and other seasonal tastes.

My Old World Bakery
This little bakery on the Hilltop bakes cakes, breads, cookies and a selection of donuts, from fritters to chocolate- or vanilla-iced yeast donuts, pumpkin spice and French crullers.

The Original Goodie Shop

The Goodie Shop has been a favorite of Upper Arlington residents for decades. Find it in the Tremont Center in Upper Arlington, near other community favorites like Huffman’s Market and Chef-O-Nette diner. They specialize in cookies and cakes, but their donuts can’t be missed, from the cake stick donuts to the glazed twists to the cinnamon sugar raised donuts.

Peace, Love and Little Donuts

Much like Duck Donuts or the Little Donut Shop, the groovy Peace, Love and Little Donuts in Old Worthington crafts tiny cake donuts that they dip and glaze with fun flavors. Check the display cases to see what they’re making; try the chocolate dipping in chocolate chips, vanilla topped with Fruity Pebbles or the blueberry pancake donut.

Resch’s Bakery

Resch’s has been making the good stuff since 1912! The sixth generation of the family works their East Side bakery, where you can order cakes and breads in addition to donuts. They excel at the old school varieties: twisted glazed yeast donuts, cake donuts covered in chocolate or the popular nut-topped cinnamon rolls (called the granny roll when drizzled with white icing!).

Schneider’s Bakery

Schneider’s is the neighborhood favorite for Westerville. Their Uptown storefront is the place for cookies, cakes, breads and loads of donuts. They’re known for their Davy Crockett (a cinnamon twist with maple icing) and Nut Toppers (a glazed cinnamon bun with white icing and peanuts). Schneider’s also serves the Celebration Donut, a 10-inch yeast-raised donut that serves up to 20 people. They also open around 1 or 1:30 a.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, with Otterbein University students lining up in the middle of the night for fresh donuts.

Tupelo Doughnuts

Tupelo is a best donut shop in Columbus coming soon to Clintonville, but while they build out their space they park their bright turquoise truck, Tilly, in different spots around the city. Try their crème Brule donut, the rosewater almond or the orange cardamom donut holes.

Tour de Donut: exploring Columbus’s best donut shops

Columbus, Ohio has some incredible best donuts Columbus shops located across the city.

Krispy Kreme is a classic donut staple, but there are far fancier and better options.

Since donuts are easily one of, if not the best kind of desserts that you can eat while on the go, it makes sense someone would come along and go “Hmm, I bet that if I take this ring of cake, add some more sugar to the recipe, and throw on way more than necessary toppings, I can sell them for a lot more money.” Well, they were right, whoever they were.

This is a ranking of the top three donut places in Columbus.

For all of these places, I ordered two donuts: a simple vanilla donut with chocolate icing to give a baseline, and one of their signatures.

1st Place

In third place, we have Amy’s Donuts located at 650 Georges Ville Rd, Columbus, OH 43228, and is not even five minutes from the Hollywood Casino. While the donuts were fresh and decent overall, they lacked…zing.

I also ordered “The Elvis”. A vanilla donut with peanut butter-maple icing, bacon, chocolate drizzle, and fried banana. I must say, as much as I was looking forward to this, I was disappointed. You cannot taste the banana at all, same with the chocolate drizzle, the bacon just seemed stale, and the icing just was not strong enough.

I am not nitpicking here; they were both best donut shop in Columbus, but compared to the competition, and when you account for the fact that these two cost about $5, this place does not stand a chance.

2nd Place

In first place was Duck Donuts located at 825 Polaris Pkwy, Westerville, Ohio. This place took first because of one simple trick-they were fresh. I watched them deep-fry the donuts two minutes before I got my greedy knucks on them. They were slightly crispy on the outside and soft and steamy on the inside. I have no idea if the icing was fresh or not, but it was definitely hot.

The basic chocolate-dipped donut, with the exception of the temperature, was on par with what Buckeye Donuts had to offer. The signature though, the ‘cookies and creme’ was outstanding. It is vanilla icing with crushed Oreos and chocolate syrup drizzle.

The only thing wrong was that the Oreos were not crunchy, at all. Other than that, it’s simply delicious. It was pricey though with a total of about $6 for both.

3rd Place

In second place, we have Buckeye Donuts, located at 1363 S High St, Columbus, OH 43207.
It’s in the heart of OSU campus and it feels like it. The store is small and cramped and parking is a nightmare, but when you walk in, the smell alone makes up for it. I ordered the same basic donut. It was brilliant.

The donut itself was fresh and soft and the chocolate icing was nothing short of decadent. I also ordered one of the Buckeye donuts, the signature. This is quite similar to the basic donut as before, a vanilla donut, without the hole, covered in chocolate icing with a dollop of peanut butter on top.

This was also great, however, the peanut butter was extremely…peanut buttery. That dollop of PB dominated the entire donut and it would have been nice if it was a bit more relaxed. Overall though, both were great and the total cost was the cheapest at just under $4 for both top Donuts Store in Columbus.

National restaurant guide says these are the absolute best donut shops in Columbus

Glazed, jelly-filled, classic cake with sprinkles on top…I mean, really, the beautiful part about donuts in Columbus is that no matter what you get, or no matter which one is leftover in the break room, it’s still bound to be delicious.

Columbus has some local donut destinations for every palate. If you prefer creative concoctions like gooey macadamia nut, there’s a place for that. Want the best classic glazed you’ve ever had? We have a shop for that, too. The kids will only eat donuts that are covered in Lucky Charms and gummy worms? Yup, Columbus has those kind of donut shops as well.

Restaurant Clicks, a national guide for cities and restaurants, picked out the best donut shops in Columbus for us, and I now know what I’m doing Saturday morning.

Destination Donuts
3519 N High St.

This donut shop has made waves in the news recently for switching to all vegan batter for those with dairy allergies. Most of their donuts are also entirely vegan, and their daily creative flavors range from Dirty Chai, to Horchata, to Ube, and of course some classic vanilla, chocolate, and blueberry flavors.

Buckeye Donuts
1998 N High St.

Would Columbus even be complete without this local staple? This 24/7 donut shop offers a wide range of classic flavors, plus cream-filled and jelly-filled, but they’re somehow the best classics you’ve ever had. It’s the perfect place to grab a couple of dozen for a party, sleepover, or just a fun Friday at the office.

Amy’s Donuts
650 Georges Ville Rd.

This 24/7 coffee + donut shop boasts over 100 different flavors of best donuts Columbus, including a variety of cereal dipped donuts, covered in Fruity Pebbles and other favorites.

Donna’s Delicious Dozen
5322 N Hamilton Rd.

Key lime cheesecake donut? Pineapple upside down donut? Count me in. This locally owned donut shop serves hot coffee and a variety of indulgent donuts in outrageously delicious flavors.

Lil Donut Factory
4543 Scioto Darby Rd

Get there early — this shop is so popular that they sell out fast. They claim on their social media that they hands down have the best donuts in Columbus, so you’ll have to see for yourself. Also, they have vegan options!

Peace, Love, and Little Donuts of Worthington
656 High St, Worthington, OH

Freshly made every single day, these groovy little donuts are perfect for when you want to try a bunch of different flavors. I definitely wouldn’t consider them “little” or “bite-sized” though — they’re still piled high with fun toppings!

Honey Dip Donuts + Diner
4480 Kenny Rd.

One of the few places in Columbus where you can grab an egg sandwich, a gyro, and a dozen donuts to-go, this diner and donut shop is extremely popular for their classic options in a nostalgic setting.

Duck Donuts
7717 Sawmill Rd, Dublin, OH

This is one of those donut shops where walking in is an experience in itself. Grab an iced latte there and pick out wild donut flavors, like Bacon in the Sun and Cinna-Jelly-Bun, and for those who prefer more savory options for breakfast, they also offer breakfast sandwiches
